SPRING VALLEY, WI – Becky Leland, art instructor at Spring Valley High School reported that this quarter, the Spring Valley ceramics students spent five intense weeks learning to use a pottery wheel. This is just one section of the three-section class where students start with skill building, progress to hand building, and then move on to the pottery wheel.

This involves learning to ‘throw’ clay, experimenting with different glazes, and learning to shape their clay pieces into the beautiful pottery we see today. The student’s first project was to craft two mugs, trim the bottoms, and assemble the handles to create a finished product. The second project, inspired by Matryoshka nesting dolls, was to create three bowls that all could stack into each other.
