ELLSWORTH, WI – There has been a lot of turnover and a lot of newcomers into the fold for the Spring Valley/Elmwood wrestling team this year. The team doesn’t have wrestlers at a few weight classes, but will still be competitive, and that was shown last weekend in Ellsworth.

Obviously, Ellsworth has been the cream of the crop in Division 2 in the state for years and their Invitational brings in some good competition from both Minnesota and Wisconsin.

There is a good crop of youthful wrestlers for the Cardinals that will be competitive and getting their first chance on the mat of the season was helpful.

The Cardinals finished in seventh place out of 13 teams in the tournament. Ellsworth won with 236.5 points, followed by Dover-Eyota (183), Medford (173.5), Cadott (148.5), Sparta (129), Mora (112) and SV/E (109.5).  Following up were Northwestern (87), Prescott (70), Filmore Central (39), Unity (35) and Eau Claire North (17).

Kaleb Casey led the Cardinals as the lone tournament champion. The 106-pound freshman scored 25 points to take home the top honors, beating Avery Nelson of Mora in the 1st place match with a technical fall win (19-2).

Senior Kenny Fesenmaier lost a tough 3-0 decision in the championship match to Ethan Tegels of Cadott at 182 pounds to take second place, while sophomore Nate Fesenmaier won the third place match with a win by fall over Corbin Hauser of Sparta in the waning seconds of the second period at 160 pounds.

Freshman Tristan Neisinger lost a 4-2 decision match in the third place match to take fourth place to Jacob Dessner of Dover-Eyota at 113 pounds.

Sophomore Nolan Stans took sixth place at 170 pounds, as did junior Travis Marty at 195 pounds.

Junior Ryan Christensen finished eighth at 152 pounds, as did junior Paul Schwedach at 220 and freshman Max Schmitt at 132.

The Cardinals wrestled a dual at Somerset this past Tuesday and will wrestle at the Eau Claire North Invitational on Saturday with 22 other teams. SV/E will wrestle at Clear Lake next Tuesday, December 11, then not wrestle again until the Northern Badger Wrestling Tournament in River Falls on December 28 and 29.
