ELEVA, WI – Runners seem to be peaking at the right time and some surprising newcomers this year are doing a good job of making an impact on both the boys’ and girls’ squads this year.

That was clearly evident last week as both teams had good showings at the Amery Invite and Eleva-Strum Invitational, for the girls’ especially without some of their top runners participating due to injuries.

The girls’ team finished 11th of 12 teams that scored in the race, with six other teams not fielding enough runners to score a team score. Even though the team finished down in the scoring, they got some good results.

Freshman Claire Anderson continues being one of the top runners for the Cardinals, finishing in 37th place overall with a time of 24:37. Junior Kari Hybben was the next Valley girl through the chute in 50th place in 26:22, she as followed by freshman sisters Allison and Kaitlin Graham in 58th and 59th places respectively with times of 26:53 and 26:57. Senior Madison Maier rounded out the scoring for the Cardinals, coming through the chutes in 61st place in 27:20.

Flambeau, which did not have enough runners to claim a team score, did have the top two runners in the race in sisters Rachel Lawton and Kristen Lawton. Rachel finished first in 20:00 even and Kristen was next in 20:51. Amery’s Lydia Monson was third in 20:55.

Amery won the team portion with a score of 50 points, followed by Glenwood City (63), Prescott (98), Somerset (115), Bladwin-Woodville (117), St. Croix Falls (173), Solon Springs/Northwood (174), Grantsburg (200), Unity (224), Prairie Farm (257), SPRING VALLEY (265), and Luck/Frederic (268). Teams not scoring included Flambeau, Webster, Elmwood-Plum City, Clear Lake, Boyceville and Birchwood.

The Spring Valley boys’ finished in seventh place of 15 teams and were led by junior Jon Corriea in 22nd place with a time of 19:01. Sophomores Matt Thoms (24th, 19:05) and Cody Holcombe (33rd, 19:26) followed suit and freshman Charlie Maier (38th, 19:34) and senior Cole Pelzel (41st, 19:50) rounded out the team scores.

Birchwood junior Matthew Marcinske took top honors, finishing the race in 16:46.

The Solon Springs/Northwood team won the event with a team score of 108 points. They were followed by Amery (121), Somerset (130), Unity (132), St. Croix Falls (148), Clear Lake (154), SPRING VALLEY (158), Prescott (172), Boyceville (230), Glenwood City (235), Baldwin-Woodville (246), Birchwood (274), Webster (334), Grantsburg (357), and E-PC (430).

Eleva-Strum Cross Country Invite

The Cardinal boys’ finished in fourth place of eight teams here last Thursday. Augusta won the boys’ race with 57 points, followed by Elk Mound (81), Black River Falls (82), SPRING VALLEY (87), Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran (98), Regis (132), Thorp (211) and Alma Center-Lincoln (217).

Cade Hanson of Elk Mound finished first overall in 17:16. The Cardinals were led by Corriea in 9th place (18:48), followed by Thoms (11th, 18:55), Maier (13th, 19:00), freshman Blayne Gregg (24th, 19:37) and senior Ben Anderson (26th, 19:50)

The girls’ race was won by Elk Moundn with a team score of 20 points. They were followed by Black River Falls (53), Regis (68), SPRING VALLEY (89), and then Thorp, Alma Center-Lincoln, Augusta, Immanuel and Eleva-Strum did not have enough runners to field team scores. Anderson led the Cardinals with a 17th place finish in 24:28, followed by Hybben (23rd, 26:05), Allison Graham (28th, 26:52), Maier (29th, 27:08) and Kaitlin Graham (30th, 27:16).

The teams wrap up the regular season with the Dunn-St. Croix Conference meet today in Boyceville and will run the sectional meet next Saturday, also in Boyceville.
