BALDWIN, WI – The Blackhawks had 6 games this week and went 4-2.  The week started with a high scoring affair with a 15-14 win vs. Grantsburg.  They jumped out to a 13-2 lead early in the game and things weren’t looking good.  Blaine Guthrie then came in for his Varsity pitching debut and settled things down nicely by going 4.1 innings and allowing only 1 run on 6 hits and striking out 5.  Our bats then started to produce and with a 14-14 tie in the bottom of the 7th, Alex Bishop completed the comeback win with a walk off single to score Andrew Klopp.  It was our youth night at home (B-W HS field) and the kids got to see a lot of offense from both teams. It was great!

Tuesday was a big conference win for us as we beat Prescott 3-2 in a great game from both teams.  Alex Bishop pitched the complete game allowing only 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits and struck out 4.  Zach Bishop drove in one of the runs and the other 2 came by way of Prescott mistakes on a wild pitch and a balk.  Prescott threatened in the 7th with a guy in scoring position with 1 out, but great catches in the outfield by Sam Crowley in Left and then Andrew Klopp in Center to end the game preserved the victory.

Thursday, the Blackhawks faced the currently undefeated conference leaders in New Richmond and knew we would be in a battle.  We played a great game but fell short 2-1.  Collin Bensen started and went 4.1 innings allowing only 2 runs on 2 hits and struck out 4.  Zach Bishop finished the game going 1.2 innings and allowing no runs on 2 hits and struck out 1.  Alex Bishop lead the hitting by going 2-3 with a walk.  Defensively we made some great plays and had no errors.  Offensively we had guys in scoring position multiple innings and just couldn’t come up with a timely hit to give us the lead.  New Richmond’s a very solid team in all aspects of the game; their pitchers did a great job of holding us in check.

Friday, we went to Amery for another conference matchup and came out with a 5-1 win.  Ben Schmoker went the complete game on the mound allowing only 1 run on 4 hits, walking 1 and striking out 2.  Both Alex Bishop and Robert Crowley were 2-4 at the plate and Blaine Guthrie was 2-3 with 2 RBI’s.  It was a good win for us as it keeps us tied for 3rd place with Prescott at 5-4 in the Middle Border conference.

On Saturday, May 4, the team travelled to Cochrane-Fountain City and played them and Viroqua.  We lost to Viroqua in the first game 5-1.  Blaine Guthrie started on the mound and went 3.1 innings allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits and 4 strikeouts.  Zach Bishop finished the game allowing 1 run on 1 hit in 2.2 innings of work.  We had 8 players with a hit, but again missed some opportunities to have a timely hit to drive runs in.

In the Second game we defeated Cochrane 14-9.  This was a comeback win for us as well as we were behind 9-7 in the bottom of the 6th, but scored 7 runs to take the lead and held on for the victory.  Bailey Skelton did it at the plate and the mound.  He pitched 6 innings, allowing 7 runs on 7 hits and striking out 4.  He was 3-4 with his bat, scored 2 runs and knocked in another, and made an outstanding diving catch at the fence at a big time in the game.  Ben Schmoker was also 2-3, Lucas Newton 2-4, Blaine Guthrie started the rally in the 6th with a bases loaded double that scored 3.  It was a great way to finish up a long and tough week of ball.

Next week we play SCC on Tuesday at home.  At Cumberland on Thursday and back home again vs. Somerset on Friday.

Be sure and check out the Baldwin-Woodville High School website for all of the “Athletic Schedule” (middleborderconference.org/public/genie/91/school/2/) and go cheer on our Blackhawks!
