BALDWIN, WI – The 2017 girls’ golf season has come to an end for the B-W Hawks as they were eliminated from further competition at the Sectional Match at the Frederic golf course hosted by Luck Co-op last Monday, October 2, 2017.

The varsity team gave it a good go at Regionals on Wednesday, September 27 on a beautiful day for golf, losing to Somerset by only one stroke. Let’s start this report with the JV Conference results, the varsity Regionals, then Sectionals at Frederic.

JV Conference Results - Monday, September 25 played at Ellsworth - We had a great day - girls played 18-holes, all of them shot a personal best 18-hole score at Ellsworth.  Team score - of 437 was the best score on the day.  Also, the top 3 individual scores were from B-W golfers.  Ashley Burr medalist with a 105, followed by Lizlie Weyer and Roza Emmert with 108's good for 2nd place.  Tessa Van Someren also finished in the top 10 with a score of 116.  They all shot well!  It was a good round, and I was able to use kids that have played some varsity golf this season, and take a full team of four to Ellsworth.  It doubled as a good practice round and against competition from other schools.  All have been in at least 4 varsity matches, so they had matches remaining to play and took advantage of playing today.

REGIONAL - Wednesday, September 27 at Pheasant Hills GC hosted by Baldwin-Woodville

Going in it was wide open; the top 7 teams have all been in first through 7th place at different events throughout the season.  The individual scores have been closer this season too, so tightly contested to see who made it out of the Regional.  We did make it through with a good round of 395.

REGIONAL TEAM RESULTS - Somerset 394, Baldwin-Woodville 395, Saint Croix Central 408, Ellsworth 410, Osceola 424, Luck Co-op 429, Prescott 427, Amery 440, Colfax 444 AND Saint Croix Falls 499. Top 4 teams advance to Sectional at Frederic - Monday, October 2 - Somerset, Baldwin-Woodville, SCC and Ellsworth. Top 4 individuals not on those teams -  Annie Lorsung Amery - Medalist 88, Abby DeMoe Colfax, Alexis Fredericks Prescott, and Julianna Thompson Luck Co-op who won in a playoff.

We missed out on the Regional title by one shot, scores on our first 4-5 holes were a lot of double bogies.  Maybe a little nervous to start?  After that, all of the B-W girls played well!  Four of them shot better on the back 9-holes, which is longer and a little tougher.  Practicing on our home course and spending more time on the back the past couple of weeks sure helped.  A record that we have going and an impressive streak it is; this is the 13th consecutive team to make it on to Sectionals from Baldwin-Woodville.  Not many teams in the state can claim that streak!  We have a chance to continue, a good round by all is needed and doable, to make it to the state tournament.  We have the potential to shoot a good score, if we can limit a couple of extra chips and putts, and can put it all together on the same day we can shoot low.

INDIVIDUALLY for B-W - Hope Tiffany 48-44 = 92 - Another solid round for Hope, even after getting off to a rough start.  She has played her best golf the past couple of weeks, and will need another really good round to get a return trip to the state tournament. Emily McNamara 51-48 = 99 - Emily had a good day, she played really good golf her last couple of holes on the front 9 and then through her first 8 holes on the back 9-holes.  It was nice to see her beat the 100 mark and give her confidence. Lindsay Burr 52-48 = 100 - Lindsay too struggled with her start, but then put together a nice round on the back.  She battled after having a couple tough days of practice and struggling from the tee. Lezlie Weyer 55-49 = 104 - Lezlie had a great day, first time to get in the 40's on the back 9-holes.  She was hitting good drives and getting close to greens in regulation to have chances at pars.  She has been playing well and continues to improve. Ashley Burr 55-57 = 112 - Ashley played well, but struggled with a few chips and putting.  She hit the ball well with her irons!  This is her 2nd best 18-hole score, so she is improving and doing a nice job.

Final Results from the SECTIONAL @ Frederic - hosted by Luck Co-op - Not a good day for the Blackhawks - we struggled early in the round, which kind of took us out of it for the day.  Too many players going out of bounds and into the sand/trees.  A struggle for sure!  We did do a much better job on the last 9 holes, but our total was too high.  Shot a 420!

SECTIONAL TEAM RESULTS - Stanley-Boyd 358, Somerset 384, Ladysmith 390, Ellsworth 391, Hayward 392, SCC 413, Northwestern 414 and Baldwin-Woodville 420. Stanley-Boyd and Somerset Advance to state.

Individuals advancing to state - Emily Neff Hayward 82, Erica Feuerhelm Ellsworth 87, Abby DeMoe Colfax 87 - the 87's were tied and by using the scorecard to break the tie, 2 out of 3 made it to state.

INDIVIDUALLY for B-W - Hope Tiffany 47- 47 = 94  - Hope had a pretty good start, but then hit a couple wayward iron shots during the front 9 holes and then starting her back 9.  She ended up having about 4 tough holes, which really hurt her score.  She made 10 pars on the day, so mostly was doing a good job throughout her round. Lindsay Burr 56-47 = 103 - Lindsay had a couple holes on the front where she got into trouble and made a few big numbers.  She played pretty well and shot a nice score of 47 on the back 9-holes.  Again, a couple of holes really hurt her score early in the round. Emily McNamara 62-49 = 111 - Emily struggled out of the gate with putting, then had a few OB strokes on a few holes which cost her score on the front side.  She played much better on the back 9-holes and scored a 49, but the start was on the high side! Lezlie Weyer 58-54 = 112 - Lezlie started out her day with a par, but then had a tough 3rd hole where she was in the trees/sand and made a big number.  She had a better score on the back 9-holes and played better. Ashley Burr 63-60 = 123 - Ashley seemed to be in the trees and sand a lot today, which added strokes to her game.  She really improved this season, and will continue to get better next year.

The sad part of any season that ends is knowing the seniors have played their last rounds of golf for Baldwin-Woodville.  In this case 3 seniors will end their careers - Hope Tiffany, Emily McNamara, and Lindsay Burr.  I have had the privilege to coach all three for 4 seasons.  They make my coaching fun to do, and all three have played really good golf at times, and all are excellent young ladies.  They all have bright futures ahead of them, which I wish them luck!  They will be missed big-time by their coach.

With the season ending I'm excited about having the young girls in the program all participate in a lot of varsity action this season.  They have improved a lot and this is encouraging to know we will be competitive next season and hope to gain some additional players to the program.  The freshman, Roza Emmert, Tessa Van Someren, and Lezlie Weyer along with Sophomore Ashley Burr have had very good seasons.

Thanks for supporting the B-W Girls Golf teams!
