BALDWIN, WI – Here is the Baldwin-Woodville girls softball team report for the three games played recently. The first is the Somerset match-up and the second is about the game hosted by the Hawks vs. Amery and last, the game against New Richmond.

Somerset at Baldwin-Woodville - Following the snow from the week prior and great effort from some parents and players, the Hawks were able to host the Spartans from Somerset at Millpond.  The Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after Morgan Smetana led the game off with a solo home run to left center and Lexie Klatt scored on a base hit to left by Kaelyn Olson.  The Hawks tacked on an insurance run that proved to be the game winner in the 5th.  Brooke Evenson reached safely on an infield hit and advanced to 3rd beating the defender to the base on a sacrifice bunt by Kate Groskreutz.  Evenson then scored after another infield hit by Brook Buttke.  The Spartans threatened in the 7th cutting into the lead but the Hawks held on for a 3-2 victory.  Smetana pitched a complete game giving up two runs on six hits, striking out seven and walking three.  Bri Hanson led the Hawks with two hits.

Amery at Baldwin-Woodville - The Hawks hosted the undefeated Amery Warriors at Millpond on a perfect day for softball.  It didn’t take the Hawks long to put a crooked number on the scoreboard.  After retiring the side in the top of the 1st from the circle, Morgan Smetana ripped a single up the middle to lead the bottom of the inning off for the Hawks.  After stealing 2nd and advancing to 3rd on a sacrifice bunt by Lexie Klatt, Smetana scored on a pass ball.  Brooke Evenson then hit a double to right center and later scored on a single to center by Kate Groskreutz, giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead after one.  After Amery took the lead in the top half of the 4th, the Hawks opened the game up in their half and the 5th by scoring six runs, highlighted by a three-run homer to right-center by Smetana.  The Warriors never threatened again and the Hawks went on to win 9-3.  Good at-bats and small ball gave the Hawks opportunities and they were rewarded.  Smetana led the Hawks with three hits and five RBI’s.

Coach Klatt had this to say about the Amery game, “This was a great team win.  Every player did as they were asked to do.  Every sac bunt was performed, aggressive base running, disciplined at-bats drawing a number of walks and timely hitting were executed.  We still stranded too many runners, but we continue to give ourselves opportunities.  And Morgan in the circle, those last three innings were her best innings all season.  We were very pleased to see her development executing the various pitches.”

Baldwin-Woodville at New Richmond - The Hawks travelled to New Richmond on Thursday, April 18, 2019 where the visiting Hawks prevailed 12-3.  After Lexie Klatt singled and scored on a base hit to left by Kate Groskreutz in the 1st, the Hawks wouldn’t score again until the 5th inning when they were trailing 1-2.  The Hawks would score six runs in the 5th, one in the 6th and four more in the 7th.  Morgan Hable and Brooke Evenson led the Hawks with three hits a piece with Hable registering two doubles.  Hable, Evenson and Sydney Newton also had two RBI’s each.  Morgan Smetana went the distance giving up one earned run on seven hits while striking out seven and walking three.  The Hawks now stand 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the MBC.
