BALDWIN, WI – The Hawks travelled to Somerset on Monday to take on the Spartans.  In the last meeting, the Hawks won by a score of 3-2.  This game was no different as there were multiple lead changes. 

The Hawks took an early 1-0 lead when Morgan Smetana scored on a base hit by Kate Groskreutz.  The score was 1-1 going into the 3rd when the Hawks scored on three consecutive hits.  Smetana reached 1st on an error and then scored on a double to right center by Brooke Evenson.  Evenson came around to score in the next at-bat when Groskreutz tripled down the right field line.  Next, Morgan Hable ripped a single to center to make the score 4-1.  The scored remained until the bottom half of the 4th when Somerset was able to put five runs across giving the host team a 4-6 lead. The Hawks tied the game in the 6th when Kaelyn Olson led off with a double and later scored on a base hit to left by Syd Newton. 

Down one going into the top of the 7th, Lexie Klatt led the inning off with a line drive to right field.  After a Brook Buttke base hit to left, Klatt advanced to 3rd and on the throw, Buttke went to 2nd.  After a ground out, Hable was able to lift one to center and with a tag up and a close play at the plate, Klatt was able to slide in and tie the score at six.  The Hawks defense held and the game went to extra innings. 

In the 8th, Olson led off with a base hit to left and was advanced to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Furrer.  After a pass ball moved Olson to 3rd, Syd Newton hit another base hit to left to give the Hawks a 7-6 lead.  In the bottom half of the 8th, after a Somerset player hit a one out double, Morgan Smetana was able to shut the door and preserve the win. 

Evenson, Groskreutz (2 RBI’s), Olson, Newton (2 RBI’s) and Bri Hanson all had two hits to lead the Hawks. Hable also contributed 2 RBI’s.  Groskreutz and Smetana both pitched in the circle.  The Spartans were able to collect six runs on eleven hits.  The Hawks had seven runs on thirteen hits.

Amery - On Tuesday, May 7, the Hawks travelled to Amery to take on the 2nd place Warriors.  The Hawks started strong behind a lead-off double by Morgan Smetana and a two-run homer by Brooke Evenson.  After a couple lead changes in the middle innings, the Hawks would extend the lead and win by a final score of 7-4.  Offensively, the Hawks were led by Evenson and Smetana.  Evenson had three hits and three RBI’s while Smetana collected two hits and 1 RBI.  Lexie Klatt and Bri Hanson also had hits along with 1 RBI each.  Smetana went the distance in the circle giving up four runs on twelve hits and striking out ten. 

New Richmond - Friday, May 10, the Hawks hosted the New Richmond Tigers.  After the Tigers scored one in the top of the 1st, the Hawks answered with a run of their own.  Lexie Klatt hit a one out base hit to left and advanced to 2nd on an error.  Klatt came around to score on a line drive, two out hit to center by Kate Groskreutz making the score 1-1 after one.  The score remained there until the 5th. 

In her first appearance at the plate since game two, Ty Mittl drove a ball to the fence for a lead-off double.  Mittl then scored on a base hit to left by Morgan Smetana making the score 2-1 Hawks after five.  The Hawks opened the game up in their half of the 6th scoring six runs.  All nine batters in the Hawks line-up contributed in the inning.  Seven batters collected hits and the other two in the line-up executed sacrifice bunts.  The inning was high-lighted by Klatt’s double off the fence followed by another double by Brooke Evenson. 

After six, the Hawks lead extended to 8-1.  Morgan Smetana who started in the circle for the Hawks finished the game by striking out the last batter.  Smetana allowed one run on four hits while striking out four.  Klatt led the Hawks at the plate going 3x4 with an RBI.  Smetana and Mittl had two hits and two RBI’s each.  The Hawks now stand 10-3 in the MBC and in 2nd place.

Next up (today) Thursday, May 16 vs Hudson at Millpond Park Field at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 21 vs La Crosse Logan at Millpond Park Field at 5:00 p.m. in WIAA Tournament 2nd Round. Thursday, May 23 WIAA Regional Championship TBD. Come out and cheer on the Hawks!
