NEW RICHMOND, WI – It’s been a busy few weeks for the Cardinal wrestlers where there have been some challenges and successes.

The Spring Valley/Elmwood wrestling team competed at the Northern Badger Wrestling Tournament in River Falls in late December, won their first dual match of the conference season last week and had a fair showing in another tournament in New Richmond this past weekend.

Tonight, the Cardinals will host another conference rival, Boyceville, in Spring Valley at 7:00. The team will also compete in the Chippewa Falls Invitational on Saturday before taking a week off from competition before their next tournament.

Northern Badger
The Cardinals were one of 42 schools competing in the event. The teams were split into three divisions with the Cardinals in division two with schools that were larger. Teams like Boyceville and Glenwood City were in division three.

The Cardinals finished sixth of 14 teams in division two with 105 points and were led by senior Santana Schlegel’s sixth place finish at 152 pounds, scoring 24 of the teams’ points on his own.

Freshman Kaleb Casey scored 21 points with his seventh-place finish at 106 pounds. Sophomore Nate Fesenmaier took home eighth place honors at 160 pounds for 19 points while senior Kenny Fesenmaier scored 12 points with his 11th place finish at 182 pounds for the tournament. Sophomore Brayden Wolf rounded out the scoring for the SV/E team with his 11th place finish at 138 pounds, adding 11 points to the team.

Other wrestlers that didn’t place that earned points for the Cardinals were Tristan Neisinger (113 pounds, 4 points), Max Schmitt (132 pounds, 5 points), Nolan Stans (170 pounds, 3 points), and Travis Marty (195 pounds, 6 points).

SV/E 48, Glenwood City 30
The Cardinals took advantage of five forfeit wins to beat the Toppers. In just head-to-head competition, the Cardinals would have lost 24-18, but both teams are struggling to fill complete rosters right now and the Cardinals have fewer openings than Glenwood City does.

Nate Fesenmaier opened the match with a win by fall at 160 over Neck Melendez. GC’s Tucker Lagerstrom pinned Nolan Stans at 170 to even the score. Kenny Fesenmaier won by forfeit and Travis Marty won by fall at 196 to put the Cards up 18-6.

The Cardinals forfeited at 220 and 285 to tie the score back up at 18-18. Kaleb Casey got a forfeit win at 106 to make it 24-18, but Neisinger lost to Andy Grant at 113 to make it 24-24 again.

Skyler Beesley lost at 120 in a fall to put the Cardinals down 30-24, but the Cardinals won the next four matches by forfeit to win the dual 48-30, which included Max Schmitt (132), Brayden Wolf (138), Cross Hurlburt (145), and Santana Schlegel (152).

New Richmond Invitational
The Cardinals had some good matches at the New Richmond Invitation with freshman Kaleb Casey taking first place at 106 pounds in the tournament to lead the Cardinals. Seniors Santana Schlegel (152) and Kenny Fesenmaier (180) took second place finishes and sophomore Nate Fesenmaier finished fourth at 160 pounds.

The Cardinals finished in seventh place in the 10-team tournament with 142.5 points. River Falls took top honors with 265.5 points, followed by Amery (250.5), Osceola (227.5), Spooner/Webster (212), New Richmond (181), Rice Lake (170), SV/E (142.5), Clear Lake (134), Somerset (67), and Trinity at River Ridge (65).
