ELMWOOD, WI – Eighth grader Derik Holmes won our middle school Spelling Bee competing with 22 5th through 8th graders and won the opportunity to and represented Elmwood at the CESA #11 Regional Spelling Bee on February 27, 2019 (rescheduled due to weather from February 20) at the Baldwin-Woodville High School, Performing Arts Center in Baldwin, Wisconsin. 

Chloe Meachum placed 2nd and Taylor Asher placed 3rd during our school spelling bee.  

Holmes was there competing with top student spellers from nine other schools: Durand, Elk Mound, Ellsworth, Elmwood, Hudson, Menomonie, Pepin, Prescott, and Spring Valley.

The 2019 Spelling Bee is held in conjunction with the Scripps National Spelling Bee and the Wisconsin State Journal, CESA #11 coordinates and hosts the Badger Spelling Bee regional competition for the 39 districts within CESA #11.

CESA # 11 held a North Spelling Bee in Turtle Lake and the one for the South that Derik went to in Baldwin.

Derik placed 7th out of 21 spellings at the Regional.   He made it through 6 rounds, but the word “stipple” knocked out in the 7th round.

The Champion and 2nd place winner at each location went on to represent CESA #11 at the Badger State Spelling Bee competition that took place on Saturday, March 16 at Mitby Theater, Madison Area Technical College in Madison.  The winner of the State Spelling Bee will earn a week-long trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, May 26 – 31, 2019.

The South Bee Winners are: Champion: Shloke Jani, Hudson Middle School, 2nd Place: Varun Sridhar, St. Joseph Catholic School – Menomonie and 3rd Place: Gracie Carlton, Elk Mound.

The North Bee Winners are: Champion: Elliott Jones, Unity, 2nd Place: Katelyn Shilts, Cameron, 3rd Place: Ryland Hjelmen, New Richmond.

10-year-old Maya Jean Jadhav won the 2019 Badger State Spelling Bee in Madison by correctly spelling the word "lapilli," which is defined as "rock fragments ejected from a volcano." She came in third last year.

Jadhav is a fifth-grader at Eagle School in Fitchburg. She competed with 44 other entrants in the four-hour event at the Madison Area Technical College.

Placing second through sixth, respectively, were one of last year's winners of a tie, Immanuel Goveas, 11, of Menomonee Falls; Aryan Kalluvila, 13, of Richfield; Harsimranpreet Virk, 12, of Holmen; and Talon Wilterdink, 11, of Random Lake; and Nia Pelli, 10, of Salem.
