Shirley ‘Sam’ Alma (McNelly) Kemski Hammer, 77, passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 in Tucson, Arizona after a brief battle with cancer. Shirley was born on February 3, 1940 in Illinois.

After high school, she served two years in the U.S. Navy at Moffett Field in Southern Santa Clara County, California, where she was a swimmer and worked as a reporter for the base newspaper.

In her retirement, she became an avid farmer, gardener and enjoyed canning her vegetables. She was a wonderful quilt-maker, giving beautiful quilts to those she loved. Of all her pursuits, sewing was her love.

Shirley followed in death her parents and four siblings.

Shirley is survived by husband, Jeff Hammer, of Woodville, Wis.; daughter and two sisters, all of Tucson, Arizona; several nieces, nephews, many friends and her beloved dog Pistol.
