Mary Ann Peterson, age 90, of Baldwin, Wisconsin, died on Thursday, August 30, 2018 at the Baldwin Health Care Center where she had resided for the past two years.

Mary was born on March 29, 1928, the daughter of Edward and Minnie (Sobottka) Bjornson in Spring Valley, Wisconsin. 

Mary was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She graduated from Spring Valley High School and enrolled at River Falls State Teachers’ College where she met Gerald Peterson.

They were married on February 3, 1951. The Petersons lived in Spring Valley, River Falls and Madison. While Gerald served in the United States military, Mary lived in Minneapolis where she was employed in the test labs for General Mills.

After Gerald’s time in the active service, he completed his masters’ degree at UW-Madison.  During his public school career, Mary and Gerald lived in New Richmond, Barron and New Auburn, Baldwin, and later Wisconsin Dells before retiring in Baldwin.

Mary’s interests included interior decorating, entertaining, and vigorous discussions, especially political debate. While living in the Dells, Mary became extremely involved in the political campaigns of President George H.W. Bush as well as that of Governor Tommy Thompson.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Walter Bjornson.

Survivors are her husband Gerald; her son Jim, her grandchildren, Nick and Emily; her sisters Betty (George) Breitinger, and Lois (Norry) Larson, her sister-in-law Nancy Bjornson, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

A Gathering of Family and Friends was held on Wednesday, September 5, 2018, at Gethsemane Lutheran Church of Baldwin, WI, followed by a Memorial Service. for Mary Ann. Interment will be at the Baldwin Cemetery. Services have been entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Baldwin, WI.
