SPRING VALLEY, WI – The Spring Valley Public Library is pleased to announce a special visit from 90-year-old author Frederick Blanch from Roseville, Minnesota. Mr. Blanch will be at the library on Tuesday, May 21 at 1:30pm to share his book “The Delicious Years” which focuses on the adventures of characters in a retirement community.

Mr. Blanch has visited other libraries in the area and we have heard nothing but praise about his presentation and humor so please consider joining us for what is sure to be a fun time! Refreshments will be served by the Friends of the Library and, for those who are in need of a ride to this program, please contact the Seniors Staying Put organization in town as they are orchestrating rides for those who are in need of transportation.

During the month of April, the fourth and fifth grade students of Mrs. Stevens at Spring Valley Elementary School were assigned persuasive writing assignments. A few of the students wrote their assignments on persuading people to visit their public library. We were thrilled to read their essays which their teacher shared with us and thought their comments were so inspiring that we are sharing a few of their remarks here with all of you! The students remarked:

“People should go to the public library. They should go because they have books and movies, and you can go to play on the computer. Sometimes there are movies to watch in the back of the library. It has lots of movies and CDs.  It also has many books.”

“People should go to the library. They should go to the library because they have books, and you can go there to read. They have all sorts of books. They also have computers. People use the computers to play games, and to finish their writing. They also have movies. You can rent the movie for about a week. Those are some reasons you should go to the library.”

“People should go to the public library. Our library has lots to offer! They have the usual books and movies, but our library brings in authors and has story time. The shelves are full of interesting books for people of all ages. If the book you want isn’t there, just use the MORE system, and your book will arrive shortly. One of the most exciting things our library does is bring in authors. They have authors come in for people of all ages. During Children’s Book Week, Shelley Tougas and Connie Kingrey Anderson have talked to the classes. It was great to meet authors and ask them questions! For the youngest kids, there is Story Time on Wednesday mornings. For school age kids, there are early release programs where kids can make crafts, hold snakes, and do cool experiments. They also show movies. There are so many things that can bring people into our public library! The people in the library are always kind and helpful. People should stop by and check it out!”

“The public library allows after school programs and more. The library has art, movies, competitions, scavenger hunts, Legos, computers, after school programs, comfy chairs, and (of course) lots of books. I enjoy going to the public library. I find a lot of books there that I like to check out. I think other people should go there, too.”

“People should go to the public library. It has so much to offer. There are books, movies, and they have story time. They also have computers at the library. They should go and get some books and some movies. There are a lot of kid books and books with information. I like the library it has a bunch of books. You will like the library it is so fun.”

“People should go to the public library to get really good books. One of my favorite books from the library is Kindred Soles. There are also many other good books that I might read. The library also has computers. It is nice that the library has computers available for people. I like to go to the public library. I always find books there that I want to read. I think other people should go to the public library. Give it a try!”

I certainly couldn’t disagree with our wise 4th and 5th graders, could you?
