The case was initially reported on September 21, 2017 on our website (link below). We reported that in Eau Claire County on Monday, September 11, 2017 Daniel “Dino” Bengtson, of Elmwood, was charged with three felonies (two class C and one Class D), including using a computer to facilitate a child sex crime.

According to the criminal complaint released from the Eau Claire County Clerk of Court, which included the police reports establishing “Probable Cause” for the complaint, Bengtson replied to an online ad under the “Casual Encounters” section of Craigslist. The ad was posted on September 5, 2017 by an Eau Claire Police detective posing as a 14-year-old female with the initials “MP.” The ad indicated that MP was young with not much experience, and was looking to experience and try different things.

On Tuesday, September 5, 2017, the detective received an alleged reply from Bengtson, saying, “I absolutely love giving full body massages and oral!” There is more in the report that is stated in the email exchanges, such as Bengston's claim he is from the Menomonie area and his inquiry if MP is on birth control.

Bengtson exchanged photographs and emails, and arranged to meet at Carson Park in Eau Claire on September 8. When Bengtson arrived, he was observed as the male who was in the photos that were sent over email. As the vehicle entered the park just prior to the main parking lot, a traffic stop was initiated and the vehicle came to a stop.

The male was identified as Daniel R. Bengtson. Bengtson had a substantial amount of cash with him, as well as a condom in the truck. He was arrested after police accused him of trying to solicit sex with a minor online.

A hearing was scheduled for October. If convicted on all counts, Bengtson faced a maximum sentence of 85 years in prison, or fines totaling $250,000, or both.

As detailed above Judge Jon Theisen has sentenced Bengtson to five years probation for a Felony Class C - Attempt 2nd Degree Sexual Assault of Child. Bengtson pleaded guilty to that charge and the charges of Felony Class D – Child Enticement and Felony Class C – Use a Computer to Facilitate a Child Sex Crime were dismissed.
