TOWN OF MARTELL, WI - The weather was October blue skies perfect last Sunday afternoon for the Open House at Mystical Rose Gardens. Friends, family and interested people came from far and wide to see the beautiful reincarnation of what had once been Anderson Plant Farms.
Guests were welcomed on the site as they came inside the gleaming white picket fence that surrounds the Mystical Rose Gardens compound. The site is lushly landscaped, and a quartet of musicians played as children danced and the water fountain flowed elegantly in the former retail glass greenhouse that will be a marvelous space for indoor dinning, dancing and gathering.
Decorative concrete walks and wooden arbors connect the two main buildings of the complex providing a perfect environment for retreats, weddings and receptions. Everyone was so impressed with the facilities.
A lovely gazebo will be perfect for outdoor wedding ceremonies and concerts. It is surrounded by a large grassed courtyard that can seat hundreds or be set for smaller intimate affairs.
The courtyard and walks connect to the retreat center that once housed the Plant Farm offices and storage facilities, which as been transformed beautifully into a space for a bride and her party to dress as well as a space to accommodate groups of hobbyists.
The hobbyists such as Scrap bookers, quilters or others will find everything they need to come for a weekend of craft production. The building has a large workspace, kitchen, a casual area with large flat screen TV for lounging and loft for future sleepovers. There is even a picture memory gallery dedicated to Anderson Plant Farms in the hallway adjoining the dressing and restrooms.
Perhaps it was a coincidence, but knowing Lori Anderson, I doubt that there wasn't some significance in holding this welcoming event on 10/10/10.
Anderson the mother of ten wonderful children lost her parenting partner and loving husband Mark two years ago to a fatal sleep walking accidental fall.
Mark Anderson, the founder of Anderson Plant Farms, who very literally grew the business with the help of Lori and his dedicated family to a successful 25 year enterprise that sadly ended with his death.
According to the Mystical Rose Gardens web site, their story is told as follows;
Mystical Rose Gardens is the continuation of a vision that began over 30 years ago. It had its humble beginnings with a young man and his family, one greenhouse, and a love of horticulture. As years passed, the family and business grew and became a well-loved destination known as Anderson Plant Farm. Visitors came from miles around to enjoy the beautiful flowers and a friendly cup of coffee. They always returned home with a happy heart and car-load of plants for their gardens.
The vision turned suddenly with the accidental death of this beloved man. Many hearts grieved with sorrow and desolation as greenhouses were dismantled, taken away, and the beauty of much love and many years was flattened to the ground. All seemed lost and forgotten.
Over those years of life and growth, millions of seeds had been carefully planted. But then, even through the darkness of death one tiny seed began to sprout and grow-the seed of love of green things and all that is good and serene in this world. Ideas and inspirations began to blossom into gardens and pathways; hopes and dreams into a citadel of retreat, reflection and respite.
"This will be a work in progress," said a humble and happy Lori Anderson as she greeted the many friends and guests at the Open House on Sunday.
Anderson knows that her late husband would be pleased with all the hard work of family and friends. An impressive reincarnation has taken place at the former growing center blossoming into Mystical Rose Gardens.
"It truly is a labor of love," said a smiling Anderson.
She also spoke of her gratitude to Martell Town Chairman Arby Linder who was most helpful in the zoning and permitting process, as was the often-difficult Pierce County Board who thankfully embraced this project without hesitation.
Anderson also thanked everyone who helped her and the family make this dream a reality.
Anderson cordially invites the public to tour this unique garden paradise with its open-air glasshouse, gazebo gardens and interior Rose and Rec Rooms. Rain or shine they will accommodate with ease and flexibility your event.
Mystical Rose Gardens is located at W5415 890th Avenue, Baldwin, WI 54002, just a short distance west of Highway 63 on 890th Avenue. You may contact Anderson for a visit or reservation by Email:, or phone: 715.821.0097. You can also go online at for more information.
Congratulations to Lori and the Anderson family and friends who have created a wonderful and a most beautiful new enterprise in Pierce County for retreats, weddings and receptions.
