Submitted by Marlys Huisman for the Woodville Class of ‘54

WOODVILLE, WI – The Woodville Class of 1954 held their 64th reunion on September 19 at the Phoenix Bar and Grill in Baldwin, Wisconsin.

1954 was an interesting year. On January 14, 1954 Marilyn Monroe married baseball great Joe DiMaggio and also on the 14th of that month the Hudson Motor Car Company merged with the Nash-Kelvinator Corporation forming the American Motors Corporation. On February 23, the first mass vaccination of children against polio began and on that same date the Patent for the original Oscar Mayer hotdog car (AKA the Wienermobile) was published.

On March 1 the Class of 1954 heard of the report from U.S officials announcing that a hydrogen bomb test had been conducted in the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean. It was on March 9 that American journalists Edward R. Murrow and Fred W. Friendly produce a 30-minute “See It Now” documentary, entitled “A Report on (Wisconsin) Senator Joseph McCarthy.”

As spring got closer and graduation was near for the Class of 1954 on May 14 the Boeing 707 airplane is released after two years of development just as the Class of ’54 is ready to spread their wings.

There were thirteen Class of ’54 members (shown in picture) and their spouses in attendance.  Missing were David Albrightson, Derith (Bunge) Marson, Margaret (Johnson) Wolski and Kenneth Swenson.  Deceased members of the class are Harold Thompson, Carl Reitz, Kathleen (Anderson) Lund, Roland Becker, Gordon Gossel, Edward Hillstead, Donna (Hovlid) Ruetz, Esther (Peterson) Krumm, Ethyl, (Peterson) Heldt, Patricia (Roen) Loney, Robert Stene and Jerry Strobush.

All enjoyed visiting and reminiscing and plan to meet again in two years.
