SPRING VALLEY, WI – It seems as if all of a sudden those colorful red and black, “Home of a Spring Valley Cardinal” lawn signs with the distinctive Cardinal logo are everywhere in the Village of Spring Valley and surrounding area in the Spring Valley School District. Surely you have noticed them or have one in your yard.

The signs showing support for the schools are also displayed prominently on the entry drive into the Spring Valley Middle High School (SVMHS) along with the colorful Cardinal logo feather flags that welcomed everyone back to the 2018-2019 school year.

Having not helped but noticed the signs, this reporter who no longer has a child in Spring Valley Schools had to inquire where was this plethora of lawn signs was coming from? Who was the mastermind in this invasion of the lawn landscape with this “Home of a Spring Valley Cardinal” signage?

An inquiry to SVMHS Principal Gretchen Cipriano led me to connecting with Mindy Matthys who along with Jane Borderding and others are on the Junior Post Prom Committee.

Mindy was kind enough to satisfy my growing curiosity about those everywhere signs.

She reported that she and her husband Jason, had seen similar signs in another school district and they thought they were a great idea to help foster school spirit in Spring Valley.

“The Junior class was looking for a way to raise funds for their post prom party this upcoming spring by getting the community involved and rallying behind our schools.  The signs were the best way to show our Cardinal Students support,” the pleasant Matthys stated by phone and email to the Sun-Argus.

She continued saying, “The Junior class parents thought it would be really awesome to see the signs in yards and businesses as the sport season approached.  Our goal was to have the signs in yards by the first home football game.  There are over 300 signs in and around our community.”

Mindy Matthys informed the Sun-Argus that the Junior Class is still selling the good looking "Home of a Spring Valley Cardinal" signs for $15 and golf umbrellas with the Cardinal logo for $20. “If any member of our community or surrounding area would like to purchase a sign or pre-order an umbrella please contact me at 715-220-8837.”

If you would like one of those nice golf umbrellas with the Cardinal logo you need to pre-order it with your $20 payment by Sunday, September 16.

All proceeds from the sale of those colorful red and black, “Home of a Spring Valley Cardinal” lawn signs and logoed golf umbrellas will go to the Junior Class Post Prom.

Mindy said lastly, “The Junior Class is hopeful that this fundraiser will continue over the years by the underclassman. There are still plenty of yards that would look great with a Cardinal Sign.”
