MIDDLETON, WI -- On Monday, October 23, 2017 the Woodville Leader received notice from the Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin headquartered in Middleton, Wisconsin that three members of the Baldwin-Woodville High School girls’ golf team have been named as Academic All-State honorees.

“The Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin (GCAW) is pleased to announce that Ashley and Lindsey Burr, along with Emily McNamara of Baldwin-Woodville High School are Academic All-State honorees for the recently concluded 2017 girls’ golf season. Sophomore Ashley Burr and senior Emily McNamara receiving a designation of High Honors and senior Lindsay Burr is receiving a designation of Honors.”

Students are nominated by GCAW member coaches if they meet the following criteria: (1) A cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25, (2) participation in at least 75% of their team’s varsity matches, and (3) are at least a sophomore in high school.

Ashley, Lindsay and Emily are student-athletes who serve as great examples to others, proving that academic and athletic successes are not mutually exclusive.

The coaches’ association is proud to announce that 305 girls from 97 high schools have been honored this year for maintaining high academic standards in the classroom while competing in varsity golf.  In fact, the average cumulative GPA of this year’s honorees is an exceptional 3.785.

The GCAW was formed by high school golf coaches in 1986 to help build Wisconsin's reputation for developing quality junior players by promoting golf in our schools and communities. Besides honoring both boys and girls who succeed as student athletes, the association also selects an annual All-State team for boys and girls based on their playing ability.  An academic ‘Team’ award honoring high school teams with the highest cumulative GPA is also acknowledged.  The girls’ team award will be announced in February 2018.

In addition to the Academic All-State honorees two members of the Baldwin-Woodville High School girls’ golf team have been named to All-Conference honors. Senior Hope Tiffany has earned a place on the All-Conference 1st Team and senior Emily McNamara has earned Honorable Mention All-Conference. Hawks Coach Eric Harmon reported this about All-Conference: “All Conference - 10 players are on the first team - they earn points throughout the season, so points are accumulated throughout the year.  The conference tournament, 18 holes, is worth double points.  Hope Tiffany had a good score at conference, 3rd place on the day with a 94.  Then she won the last event of the year at Ellsworth shooting a 40 to earn the 10 points that day.  She ended up in 2nd on the season with overall points.  The top 10 received medals, which were given out that day. Emily McNamara earned enough points throughout the season to gain Honorable Mention.  She was tied for 12th.  The top 15 for the year are considered All-Conference, top 10 AC, next 5 Honorable Mention.  Lindsay Burr tied for 15th but missed on the tie breaker which was who shot better at the 18-hole conference tournament.”

This reporter asked the 3 leading seniors on the golf team what their plans are after high school graduation.

Lindsey Burr said, “I am going to college at St. Kate’s and plan on going into medicine to be a pediatrician and playing softball.”

Hope Tiffany stated, “I am looking at some colleges and will be majoring in business and playing golf.”

Emily McNamara smiled and said without hesitation, “I will be going into college to study biology and plan on being a dentist.”

Sophomore Ashley Burr doesn’t have any college plans yet, but did say she plans on going out for the Hawks’ golf team again next year, “But it won’t be the same without these guys. I’m going to miss them!”

Congratulation ladies, you had a good golf season and we wish you well in the future!
