BALDWIN, WI – The Baldwin-Woodville High School softball team picked up a close 3-2 win for the season opener away against Elk Mound on Tuesday night, March 28, 2017.

Kayla Furrer went the distance for 7 innings with 9 strikeouts to pick up the close win for the Hawks. The rest of the Hawks game roster included Brooke Evenson, Sidney Roemhild, Lindsay Burr, Alexis Maurer, Maddie Campbell, Alex Carlson, Hannah Phelps and Sydney Newton.

Here are the highlights of the game from Head Coach Klatt: Elk Mound opened the scoring with 1 run in the bottom of the 3rd inning.  Later, in the top of the 5th the Hawks answered back with 3 runs of their own.  Hannah Phelps led off the inning with a base hit to left, followed by a sacrifice bunt executed by Sydney Newton that led to a throwing error at 1st base putting runners at 1st and 3rd with no outs.  Brooke Evenson hit a base hit to left scoring Phelps and advancing Newton to 3rd.  Evenson then advanced to 2nd on a stolen base.

Elk Mound was able to retire the next two B-W batters before Alexis Mauer connected on a clutch, 2-out base hit scoring two and helping B-W take a 3-1 lead. Elk Mound was able to put up one run in the bottom of the 7th but a relay throw from Evenson to Burr to Campbell at 3rd retired the Elk Mound runner for the third out of the inning ending the game.

Coach Klatt said, “For the first game of the season, I thought our girls played pretty well.  We had some key hits and we were able to lay down some timely bunts and move base runners over when needed.

Defensively the girls were sound.  The girls communicated well throughout the game, which was evident on the last play of the game where we were able to cut down the runner trying to advance to 3rd.  Kayla Furrer also pitched a good game.  She was able to battle through the bottom of the 5th inning where Elk Mound had a lead-off triple.  She struck out the next two Elk Mound batters before getting the last batter to ground out to 3rd.  I was proud of how the defense made plays behind her throughout the game.  We certainly have some things that we have to continue to work on that were negatives for us tonight, but we also have some positives that we can continue to build off of.”

The next game is this Friday night, March 31, 2017 vs Menomonie at 5:00 pm at Millpond Park Softball Field, 733 220th St. Baldwin, WI. GO HAWKS!
