MADISON, WI - The Spring Valley/Elmwood wrestling team sent five individuals to the state wrestling meet this past weekend, three of them came home with some hardware.
All three seniors finished well enough to earn medals with Cruze Hurlburt finishing in third place, Seth Schlegel finishing in fourth place with Dylan Bune taking fifth place in their respective weight classes.
Hurlburt started the tournament with a 9-3 decision win over sophomore Guenther Hebbe of Princeton in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal, Hurlburt fell to Justin Tollefson, a senior from Fenimore. Tollefson would eventually win the 145 pound crown for the state title. The Fennimore senior won in an 8-4 decision over Hurlburt. Hurlburt then defeated Random Lake’s Grayson Vandenbush with a 9-0 decision to get into the third place match. Hurlburt then beat Steven Jerry of Ladysmith for the third place finish with a 7-2 decision victory.
Schlegel started his tournament at the 132 weight class with a 7-1 decision win over Jacob Luckow of Mishicot. He took his next match with a 7-1 decision win over Jake Drexler of Stratford to make it to the quarterfinals. Schlegel then fell in the quarterfinals with a tough 9-0 major decision loss to eventual 132 champion Carl Hansen of Deerfield, forcing Schlegel into the runner up bracket. Schlegel defeated Coleman sophomore Jake Baldwin with a 6-5 decision, but fell in the third place match to Drexler in a very hard fought match that came down to sudden victory scoring.
Bune opened his run with a quarterfinal win over Laconia junior Zach Foth with a 8-0 major decision win. Trevor Wanek of Fennimore beat Bune in a very tight 3-2 decision. Wanek would win the 126 weight class. Bune lost to Stratford’s Derek Marten in his next match with a 5-0 decision then faced Foth again in the fifth place match, which Bune won with a fall early in the second period.
Junior Nick Hofacker was eliminated when he lost his first match of the tournament, a 7-3 loss to Stephen Schostak of Ken. Christian Life. Sophomore Carter Merth also lost his first match of the tournament to be eliminated in a 7-5 decision loss to Darlington/Black Hawk junior Tyler Mosley.
But the wrestling season is not done yet. The Cardinals will leave for Madison on Friday to compete in the Wisconsin Team State Tournament on Saturday. SV/E opens the dual match tournament facing Fennimore, a team ranked third in the state for most of the season. Fennimore sent nine wrestlers to the individual state tournament. The other two teams are Random Lake and Stratford, who sent nine and eleven wrestlers to the tournament as well.
The Cardinals and Fennimore will wrestle at 10:00 a.m., while Stratford and Random Lake will wrestle at the same time. The two winning teams will compete for the gold trophy at 3:00.
