WOODVILLE, WI -- Girl Scout Troop 55673 worked on earning the Bronze Award by making a screech owl house and a bat house for the Baldwin-Woodville’s Giezendanner School Forest.

We worked with Forest Coordinator Debby Walters to find out the needs for the school forest and the placement of the houses. Troy’s Carpentry and More donated the supplies for the houses and worked with us on building and installing them. We learned about the habitat of screech owls and bats. We used power tools to build the houses and paint them. We worked hard on the installation by carrying them through the school forest on their 12 foot long posts, and helped with the installation.

Bat houses are important because bats are losing habitat. Bat houses provide a warm and safe place for bats to roost and raise their young. Screech owl numbers are declining. Appropriate housing is important to help them.

The Girl Scout Troop 55673 consists of: Anabelle Gilbertson, Dakota Stevens, Emma Yanish, Gabby Affolter, Grace Schmidt, Hannah Forrest, and Madison Clark.

Other groups or individuals wishing to make donations to the school forest or to help in its development and maintenance are asked to contact Debby Walters, School Forest Coordinator, 715-698-2981 or 715-222-0021, Interschool mail: Viking Middle School.
