George Wayne Helgeson, age 98, of Woodville, WI, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 4, 2017.

George was born to Christ and Inga (Lund) Helgeson on October 25, 1918 at home in Brookville, township of Eau Galle, St Croix County, WI. He attended Brookville grade school and graduated from Woodville high school in 1936. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Woodville, WI.

In 1940, George enlisted in the US Navy. After basic and advanced training in aviation mechanics, George was assigned to the Naval Air Station on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. During his travel to Hawaii, George was married to his beloved wife Lucille Gullickson at the Zion parsonage in Woodville on April 8, 1944. After a two year separation, Lucille was able to join him in Hawaii in early 1946. George attained the rank of CPO and served honorably until his discharge in  the summer of 1946.

After returning home, George worked on the construction and installation of diesel engines at the REA facility east of Baldwin. He farmed, drove school bus, and worked at a defense plant in Menomonie, WI during the Korean War. In 1956, George joined Iverson Lumber Company where he did construction work and, later on, managed both the Woodville and Knapp lumber yards. In 1966, George and Russell Anderson (Lucille’s brother-in-law) incorporated A&H Builders. They built and remodeled homes and other buildings throughout the area.

George served for many years on the board of directors for Citizens State Bank in Woodville. He was a proud and dedicated member of Woodville’s American Legion Post 301 for 70 years.

In retirement, George enjoyed spending time with his family, woodworking, travelling, Canada fishing, playing golf and walking. Lots of walking.

He was preceded in death by his wife Lucille in 2008, his four brothers: Lloyd, Alton, Howard and Clifford and son-in-law Philip Wright.

George is survived by his children Gary (Renee), Nancy Wright, Wayne (Patrice), Warren (Dorinda), and Paul (Judy), grandchildren Heidi (Jared) Story, Andy Helgeson, Traci (David) Hetterly, Terry (Denise) Wright, Keri (Dean) Davenport, Sally Paul, Ryan Helgeson, Kady (Bob Ainsbury) Long, Adam Helgeson and Alex Helgeson, 11 great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law Virginia Helgeson and Virginia (Al) Johnson and many nieces, nephews and friends.

All who were privileged to know him will remember George as a wise, humble, kind, generous and resilient man.

Visitation from 5:00-8:00 pm on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church in Woodville. Funeral service on Monday, April 10 at 11:00 am at Zion with pastor Keith Anderson officiating. Visitation for one hour prior to the service. Military honors by American Legion Post 301. Interment at Sunset Memorial cemetery in Woodville. Pallbearers are grandchildren Adam Helgeson, Alex Helgeson, Ryan Helgeson, Sally Paul, Terry Wright and great-grandson Garet Long. Arrangements by Keehr Funeral Home, Spring Valley, WI.
