Robert Murphy of Rockville, MD died January 31, 2017 in Suburban Hospital, where he was being treated for respiratory distress.
Robert was born in Wisconsin, the son of Benedict and Mae Donnelly Murphy and grew up on a dairy farm. A former graduate of Spring Valley High School class of 1951. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin - River Falls and began a lifelong passion for international development when he was selected for the first Peace Corps group to the Kingdom of Nepal in 1962.
His two-year Peace Corps stint stretched into nearly a decade in Nepal where he was the first manager of the Tiger Tops resort. He later served as a USAID contractor in a dozen countries – Peru, Nepal, Honduras, Guatemala, Panama, Haiti, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Albania and Sri Lanka.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Ballantyne; son John Ernesto Murphy; daughter-in-law Marisol; and granddaughter Estela; two sisters Isabelle O’Connell of Wisconsin and Jean Joynt of California; nieces and nephews stretching across Wisconsin and Minnesota.
A memorial mass was held February 18 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at 7500 Pearl Street, Bethesda, MD.
