ELMWOOD, WI – According to Jake Sailer; Herb Husby Elmwood’s former barber started the tradition along with “Shorty” Demarce of flying over downtown Elmwood during one night of UFO Days and doing a “plate drop.”

Jake figures it was at least 35 years ago as he can remember chasing after those dropped paper plates when he was a kid growing up in Elmwood. As 2017 was the 39th Annual UFO Days Celebration, this tradition may have even started with the beginning of UFO Days. He recalls that after four or five years it just kind of quit.

“I remembered how much fun it was and I wanted to bring it back,” said Sailer, the local Master Meat Crafter and co-owner of Elmwood’s award-winning Sailer’s Meats.

And bring it back he did. Sailer got his pilot’s license last January and with the aid of Darrel Gibson (Owner), and Jacob and Michael Kuhn (Aircraft Technicians) of Gibson Aviation out of Menomonie, Wisconsin they set up the Friday, July 13 early evening plate drop over town.

Sailer coordinated the plate drop with Citizens State Bank of Elmwood who gathered prize certificates from area businesses and attached them to many of the 2,000 paper plates that were tossed out of the Cessna 182 airplane from Gibson Aviation by the Kuhn brothers.

This event was a big crowd pleaser for the start of the 39th Annual UFO Days Weekend Celebration.

“It was a big hit, it brought people into Elmwood on Friday night and with the Stipes Carnival, people stayed in town and enjoyed the evening and kept the Food Tent quite busy!” said 2017 Co-UFO Day Grand Marshal Donna Lien.

The Plate Drop took place at 6 p.m. and that allowed everyone time to stop at the UFO Days Food Tent for a delicious UFO Days Hamburger or UFO Days Brat (fresh flavorful meat from Sailer’s of course!).

This was before they then headed into the historic Elmwood Auditorium for the 2017 Miss Elmwood Scholarship Pageant where the audience was entertained. First with a cute dance number from the departing court of 1st Princess Kendra Kern and Princess Sophia Tiffany. And then by the Little Dancers of Elmwood: Casey Joyce and Alyssa Schoch, Choreographers and Dancers: Kyra Edgemon, Aurora Sampair, Paige and Riley Ginsbach, Cloe Hardy, Britta Link and Rocky Robe. Great moves girls!

At the conclusion of the pageant everyone was surprised with the wonderful announcement that the 2016-17 Princess would accept moving up and becoming this year’s Miss Elmwood Royalty.

Kendra Kern was coronated the 2017-18 Miss Elmwood and Sophia Tiffany was crowned 1st Princess.

Jake Sailer said that he would be happy to continue the UFO Days Plate Drop tradition next year if he is asked… “Please do it again Jake!”

It was great fun for a great 2017 Elmwood UFO Days Celebration, way to go Elmwood!
