ELMWOOD, WI – The Elmwood Crain-Ottman American Legion Post 207 and Auxiliary Unit 207 held their joint annual Lighting of the Lights in Veterans Park in Elmwood on a frigid Friday, December 9, 2016.

The annual Lighting of the Lights in Veterans Park event was scheduled for 6 p.m. and it is amazing how dark it seems for that early in the evening, but it is winter.

Before the Lighting of the Lights, the National Anthem was sung by fifth grade student Alixis “AJ” Nehring. AJ did a nice job of singing the Anthem a cappella. She has done this in the past for other Legion events such as their flag burning ceremonies. AJ also plays the piano and clarinet and is a member of the new Elmwood Valley Patriots 4-H Club. Aj is also an Auxiliary Unit 207 Jr. member.

At a bit after 6:00 pm Post 207 Commander, Thomas Werner, counted down from 10 to 1 along with the crowd, and all the lights came on at the same time to the sounds of the oohs and aahs and clapping of hands from the crowd. Then they flickered briefly and went out. The commander tinkered with the cords and the lights were restored to their holiday glory. Although Sandra Werner, Auxiliary Unit 207 President, did report that they had had some issues with some of the lights this year and not all of them were working.

That didn’t put a damper on the crowd of about 30 or so hardy folks; six Legionnaires and 12 Auxiliary members and the rest were Jr. Auxiliary, friends and community members who were properly dressed for the brisk night.

Then the there was a group session of signing some Christmas Carols that sounded very nice echoing through Elmwood’s Veterans Park.

As is the current tradition Auxiliary members baked dozens of cookies and there was hot chocolate and hot coffee to enjoy with the cookies and other treats.

The group visited a bit over the treats before heading home. It was a nice event to get in the Christmas holiday spirit. Well done Elmwood Am. Legion and Auxiliary!
